"Today, General David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker appeared before a joint hearing of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee to deliver a progress report on the war in Iraq. Congress required the delivery of today's report, along with a Presidential report due by September 15th, documenting the status of operations in Iraq. This requirement was included in the emergency supplemental appropriations bill that Congress passed in May, providing additional funding for the war. This legislation also established 18 benchmarks for the Iraqi government as a way to measure the level of progress being made."
"A report prepared by the non-partisan Government Accountability Office (GAO) and released on September 4th stated that of the 18 benchmarks established by Congress which were based on benchmarks that President Bush himself set forth in January only three have been met. Four other benchmarks have been partially met and the remaining eleven have not been met."
"I will continue fighting to end this war and start bringing our men and women in uniform home. We have lost far too many lives already."
