Capuano Honors the Late Congressman Moakley at Roxbury Community College

August 31, 2004

The exhibit is on loan from Suffolk University's John Joseph Moakley Archive and Institute. It is on display at the RCC library through Tuesday September 14th.

The exhibit highlights Congressman Moakley's involvement with the people of El Salvador during a time when the United States provided funds for Salvadoran military operations. Moakley led a congressional investigation into the murder of 6 Jesuit priests and two women in El Salvador. After his investigation revealed that the murders had been directed from the Salvadoran armed forces, Congress cut off military funding. Moakley's work eventually resulted in democratic elections and a United Nations peace accord.

Capuano in front of Moakley exhibit"This exhibit highlights just why Joe Moakley was such an exceptional leader. He fought tirelessly to make sure that those responsible for the murders in El Salvador were exposed and he gave a voice to those who were oppressed," stated Congressman Capuano.

Suffolk University established the John Joseph Moakley Archive and Institute in 2001 to house the late South Boston Congressman's papers.
