Capuano Calls for Pools to Remain Open

July 19, 2004

Congressman Mike Capuano has asked the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to reverse its recent decision to close two neighborhood pools early during the week of the Democratic National Convention. DCR announced that the Latta Brothers Pool in Somerville and the Magazine Pool in Cambridge are closing at 4 PM due to traffic concerns.

"Most people who use those facilities travel on foot and have minimal impact on traffic flow in the area. It just doesn't make sense to limit pool hours based on traffic concerns. If there are other concerns surrounding an early closure, they should be communicated to local residents," wrote Congressman Capuano, whose district includes Cambridge and Somerville.

Congressman Capuano called the pools "an oasis for Cambridge and Somerville residents" and asked the DCR to operate both pools under a normal schedule during the last week in July.
