Rep. Capuano Secures Technology Money for Roxbury Community College

December 18, 2000 -- Last Friday evening, December 15th, the House of Representatives passed the Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations bill for FY 01, which contains a provision targeting funds for Roxbury Community College.

The bill specifies that $723,000 of the Department of Education's Higher Education account be directed to the College for necessary computer technology improvements. "This funding can be used by Roxbury Community College for the acquisition of computer technology and the upgrading of current systems," stated Rep. Mike Capuano.

Due to a shortfall in funding, the College has only been able to update its system in a piecemeal fashion over the past several years. This has led to a situation where some systems are incompatible, and some needs have gone unmet. For example, the College's library catalog remains manual - the only library in the Massachusetts public higher education system that is not automated.

"Roxbury Community College is committed to educational excellence. Preparing students for careers in the information age is extremely difficult when you are working with outdated and incompatible equipment," said Rep. Capuano. "I am pleased to be able to provide the College with some financial resources so that they may make improvements to technology."
