Senators Kennedy and Kerry, Rep. Capuano Announce Grant Funding

November 17, 1999 -- Today Senator Edward Kennedy, Senator John Kerry and Representative Michael Capuano announced that the Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the Chelsea Housing Authority $77,199 to fund programs that address the issue of drug use.

The money may be used to fund drug prevention, treatment and elimination programs. It can also be used to support tenant patrols around Authority housing developments and make physical improvements to structures.

Senator Kennedy said, "This grant demonstrates the commitment of the Clinton Administration and HUD to improve communities throughout the nation. These funds will enhance Chelsea's efforts to build a stronger community by providing better, drug free public housing."

"Every family in Massachusetts deserves to live in a safe and drug-free environment," stated Senator Kerry. "This funding will help create an environment where communities can flourish and children can grow up in safety."

"This funding will provide the Chelsea Housing Authority with more tools to combat drug use and to create a safer environment for residents," stated Rep. Mike Capuano.
