Congressman Capuano to Visit the Neighborhoods of the 8th During the Upcoming District Work Period

March 25, 1999 -- 8th District Representative Michael Capuano will spend the upcoming spring recess traveling throughout the district visiting schools, health care facilities and local businesses. The spring recess begins on Monday March 29th and concludes on Sunday April 11th.

"I am looking forward to this extended district work period. It's a great opportunity to spend some time with my constituents and learn more about the issues that concern them in their own communities as well as on the national level," Rep. Capuano stated. A variety of activities are scheduled for the two week period, including the following: On Monday March 29th at 4:30 PM, Congressman Capuano will join neighborhood groups, elected officials and concerned citizens at a rally on the steps of the State House to protest Massport's plans to build an additional runway at Logan Airport.

Mike will visit the Madison Park Technical Vocational High School on Tuesday March 30th beginning at 9:30 AM. He will tour the school and visit with students. Madison Park is the only technical vocational high school in the Greater Boston area. Later that evening, Mike will join a coalition of neighborhood groups in Roxbury at a town meeting on Massport's proposed runway. It will take place at Roxbury Community College from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.

Mike will then attend a benefit for the Bunker Hill Community College Foundation's college textbook assistance program at the Hampshire House in Boston. The benefit will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Bunker Hill Community College is located in Charlestown.

On Wednesday March 31st from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, Mike will visit the Chenery Middle School in Belmont. Chenery is Belmont's newest educational facility. He will then tour the Codman Square Health Center in Dorchester from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. After the tour, Mike will visit neighborhood businesses. At 4:00 PM on the 31st, Mike will visit the Lincoln Park Elementary School in Somerville. Students from the child care program have been working on a quilt that they will present to Mike.

Watertown High School is on the agenda for Thursday April 1st from 10:00 to 11:30 AM. Mike will tour the facility and talk with teachers and students. After the high school tour, Mike will stop by Watertown's recently renovated Cunniff Elementary School.

On Friday April 2nd Mike will tape a public service announcement for the Committee for Citizen Awareness. The Committee produces educational videotapes for schools on the three branches of the federal government. Mike will begin the second week of the district work period with a tour of Youville Hospital in Cambridge at 10:30 on Monday April 5th. Youville is a combination nursing home and assisted-living facility. Later that afternoon, he will join Congressman Jim McGovern, Mayor Thomas Menino and other members of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation at a town meeting on funding for land and water conservation, outdoor recreation and historic preservation. It will take place from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in Boston's Faneuil Hall.

On Tuesday April 6th at 10:30 AM, Mike will visit the Winship Elementary School in Brighton. Later that day, he will tour Children's Hospital in Boston. Mike will spend time in Chelsea on Wednesday April 7th with the local organization ROCA (Reaching Out For Chelsea Adolescents) to learn more about their work in the community. ROCA offers a number of educational and social activities for young people in Chelsea.

On Thursday April 8th beginning at noon, Mike will tour the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

Mike will visit the Back Bay on Friday evening April 9th, sampling fare from local restaurants during the annual "Taste of the Back Bay" at the Prudential Tower Skywalk.

On Saturday April 10th from 12:30 to 2:00 PM, Mike will speak at the annual meeting of The Association for Resident Control of Housing. This year's meeting will be held at the Swiss Hotel in Boston.
